Sugar skulls represent a departed soul, to be placed on the home ofrenda, altar, or gravestone to honor the return of a particular spirit. Sugar skull art reflects the folk art style of big happy smiles, colorful icing and sparkly tin and glittery adornments. In this workshop we will be making sugar skulls from scratch in the traditional way using sugar, meringue powder, and a mold. We will have all supplies needed, including colored icing, feathers, beads, etc (but if you have anything special to bring to adorn your sugar skull, you may). Your finished sugar skull will be ready to take home by the end of the class. This class is offered for children ages 5-18, or adults 18+
$20 per person (includes all materials, plus traditional Mexican hot chocolate and pan dulce)
In this workshop we will discuss the tradition and ritual of making and using sugar skulls to honor those who have passed. We will make sugar skulls in the traditional way using sugar, meringue and water, which we will then decorate with colored icing, charms, feathers, etc. The adult class will be more ritual based. The “kids” class is appropriate for all ages, but we do ask that children under the age of 6 have an adult present to assist.
You may bring any charms or items which have special meaning that you would like to adorn your sugar skull with, however all other supplies will be provided, along with light refreshments.
